Hong Kong Sundays

Though 95% of Hong Kong’s population is Han Chinese, its minority groups have an obvious and significant presence. One such group is the female domestic workers from Indonesia and The Philippines. Their one day-off from work is Sundays, and since they live with their employers, they don’t have homes or private spaces of their own. As a result, thousands of women congregate in outdoor parks and skyways to meet with friends and family they haven’t seen all week. The freedom to choose how each woman wants to spend the day is on public display for all to see. Women in matching sweat suits perform in hip-hop competitions or eat brightly colored meals laid out on plastic sheets. More religious individuals can be found in quiet areas, singing and praying in intricately designed headscarves. I aimed to document this cultural phenomenon and show viewers how female bonds, personal expression, and cultural ties manifest themselves on these Sundays in the park.
